One visit to the beach many, many years ago I saw a family playing with their dog on the beach. I said to Wayne, I wish you could rent a dog. I knew I wasn't ready for a life long commitment but that family sure looked like they were having fun.
About 6 years ago I became a CRO for Alaska Air. During that class we watched a video from Guide Dogs of America. That's when I decided that if I wanted to try to see if I was a dog person, this was an awesome way to do it.
As a parent, I made a deal with my kids, keep the house clean for 2 weeks without me ever asking and we will discuss getting a dog. It never happened until about 5 months ago. My daughter Dixie said that I was all talk and that what good would it do to "talk" about it? I told her, I would apply if they did it...and they did. I put in my families application to become puppy raisers.
After 5 months, today I am picking up our dog, Jess.
I'm waiting for my flight to Santa Rosa where I will go to Canine Companions for Independence's national headquarters. This past week I went to PetSmart and made a purchase other than a goldfish or goldfish food. I also went to Sam's Club and bought doggie treats. In Sam's club I kept thinking I had the wrong cart because there was dog food in it.
